Once the leaves drop, most trees go dormant, and that makes late fall and winter a smart time to prune. Without leaves in the way, it is easier to see the tree's structure and spot dead, crossing or weak branches.
Pruning while a tree is dormant is generally less stressful for it, and it leaves the tree ready to grow in spring. It also removes weak limbs before winter storms, snow and ice can bring them down on your roof or car.
